How Santiago reminds me of someone..

In this story, Santiago is obviously the character whom is spoken about the most. He goes through the most from beginning to end and it explains about how courageous he is and how he does NOT give up.  Santiago reminds me a lot of my Grandmother.  She is a woman that never, ever under any circumstances gives up.  She gives everything her all and has always been like that, so my mother says.  When my mom was around 19 years of age she lost her father and that killed my grandmother. She even came to a point where she did not want to live anymore.   A dear friend talked her out of it and ever since she’s been the strongest woman I know.  This is why I have so much love and pride for her. 

Letter to Santiago

Dear Santiago,

I think what you’re doing is extremely courageous.  Even after not having caught a fish in 84 days you still went out there to do the one and only thing you love. You have so much passion for the ocean and it’s serenity. I don’t think anyone else would do what you do. You grow a strong friendship with a young boy Manolin and he does not even care what others say about you. I think that he is also a great person and if it weren’t for his parents then he would be out there being strong and courageous with you. No matter how difficult it was to keep ahold of the fish you still did it. You had huge cuts on your hands but you still did not care.  Fishing is something you take pride in and no matter what other people say you still go out and do it. The ocean is somewhere you take to think and just relax, and that’s somewhere I believe we both connect. I absolutely love the beach and go as often as I possibly can. To me you’re a hero that did not deserve a lot that you got. You are so strong and now you’re gone. Well much love and rest in peace.

The Old Man and the Sea

The story “The Old Man and the Sea” consists of an old man, just as the title says, at sea. He is a very unlucky man but with lots of ambition. He has not caught a fish in 84 days but still gets up to do what he loves more than anything and that is to go fishing. He dreams about the beach, the beautiful waters and watching lions run on the beach. This story takes place right on the very beach that Santiago lives next to and a lot of time is taken place on the ocean. The main characters in this book consist of Santiago the old man, Manolin the young boy and of course the large bass that he catches! Santiago and Manolin both share an enjoyment for baseball. So far Santiago has gone out to sea and has caught the bass. The bass continues to swim, swim, swim and swim but Santiago does not plan on giving up and letting the large prize go. Santiago shows many characteristics those of which consist pride, faith, consistency and much more. He does not give up and stays on that boat with the bass by his side. Even fighting sharks on the way back to shore. He stays on the ocean for two straight days until he can take his fish back. When he finally arrives back home he is in really bad shape. His hands have large gashes from holding on to the fishing line and his overall health has gotten much worse. He is coughing really bad and knows the end is near for him..        

My Personal Opinion

My own personal opinion about what I’ve been writing and blogging about is a very strong one. Fashion has interested me since I could remember. You just have to know what to wear with what.. if you don’t then it won’t look good! I’m not against any particular type of clothing. I notice that many are against the “holes in the jeans” look but I disagree! It might seem raggedy and ugly when you first think about it but it really is a great look. You can wear this anywhere.. out with your friends and even to a club. A show that I really love is fashion police, also a twitter page I have decided to follow. They talk about current fashions and what celebrities are wearing but with a twist! They are so funny and so much fun to watch!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2012 trends!

This article talks about the new 2012 trends in the New York fashion week.  What they have claimed to have stayed in fashion is sportswear and as for the colors they include sorbet colors and louche, low-key silhouettes.  Something else that seems to be in the mode is flowers. There have been many flower printed clothing items such as dresses and blouses. Chic also always seems to be the great style for women. Not only are florals a good way to show your spring  and summer spirits, street looks have their own ways of transforming. They might put a baggy jean/pant paired with a tanktop, with a lady blazer of course, and a pair of beautiful pumps. The colors can greatly range but I would recommened using more suttle colors such as black, white, brown, etc. Now what is fashion without the make-up? If you know how to do it the RIGHT way that is… Backstage inspiration boards featured rouge lip colors that seemed pulled from a vanity table drawer from long ago, futuristic glittery eye accents, timeless natural tones and indelible smoky shadows and liners done in fresh ways. The overall message: pair vintage with modern to make a statement that’s unique and all your own this season. Red lipsticks are being very much used this season. As for the “in” accessories, I saw a lot of bangles being used. Like I said before, florals have been used A LOT this season and have had a fantastic turn out!

Hello Fashion World

Hi, my name is Savannah Najour and I am a student from mr. Parsons English class. For my subject I have chosen to talk about fashion. This subject interests me so much because I spend a lot of time looking through high fashion magazines such as Vogue. The different styles and ways that people wear different outfits is so interesting. How you can mix and match a shirt with a skirt, pants, shorts ranging from high wasted shorts to low wasted, long-high wasted skirts, short low wasted skirts, etc. I’m sure  you get the point. There are so many different brands in fashion, famous or not famous. My favorites at any regular store at a mall consist of Guess, Hollister, American Apparel and Urban Outifitters. High fashion names that I really like include Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabonna and Carolina Herrera. These are only a few names on the hundreds out there.  

What story I would like to speak about

In my essay, I would like to talk about the story "Speaking of Courage". I believe this story has so much significance and it opens your eyes to how war can truly affect someone. Norman specifically, and you even see how Kiowa's death has effect Norman.

How does Tim O'brien represent courage in this story?

In the story speaking of courage, Tim O'brien chooses the character Norman Bowker to represent this subject. He goes back home from the war just so wiped out and has missed so much while he was gone. The medals that he receives has a lot to do with Norman's courage. He knew he would make his father so proud and impress him by earning these medals but in his own personal thoughts and reality he did not feel excitement nor courage about these medals but more cowardliness. He just felt like the rest of the soldier, nothing special. In the book, the lake is described in an interesting way. Whenever Norman saw the lake it reminded him of war and marching around the lake in circles. Another thing said was how one half of the lake glistened while the other half was a shadow. I believe that the glistening half represented courage and the other half represented the cowardliness. This is how in the story "Speaking of Courage" Tim O'brien talks about courage.  

If I saw girl dancing after she had lost everything...

If I saw this girl dancing after she had just lost everything, including her own family, I would be extremely puzzled. I would not be sarcastic though, but more so happy for her because she is strong enough to look passed the crying and mourning and tries to go on with her life instead. It takes a truly strong person to do this.

Hunter's group blog assignment - Vietnam War and Life

When I think of the Vietnam War... I think of death, suffering, and courage. I pick these three specific words for different reasons.. death because you are surrounded by it almost everywhere you go. You live everyday not knowing if you're going to be alive or dead. Suffering because you have families and friends back home and you don't know if you're every going to even see them again.. and it's a lot of suffering for families back home. Courage because going to war is something almost no one wants to do. You're going to war, possibly losing your own life, to serve for our country and protect us. 

The second video differs from the first in a sense that it shows us a different side to Vietnam. How the people and there way of living isn’t a bad one. We see it as this terrible place when really they’re just like us. You got to see the other side of Vietnam and not JUST the war. 

1. Create a strategy and a plan of action for how you will relate your session to the first, 

second, and third. 

 2. Why is the story called “Speaking of Courage?” (Consider that the title could be both 

ironic and not ironic). 

 The story is called “Speaking of Courage because the following story revolves around Norman Bowker who had just recently came home from the war. Bowker shows his father that he received seven medals, but Bowker’s mind is troubling himself. Bowker comes home with nothing to do. All he does is sit in his father’s Chevy, ride in it for 12 revolutions around the lake, and think about himself being a coward rather than courageous. The revelation around the lake is a metaphor referred to fighting in circles during the war. In the war, he shows that he is courageous by hearing Kiowa’s scream, but he is unable to save him because if he does, he will also sacrifice himself and the stench coming from the field haunts him. If he sacrificed himself to save his friend and faced his fears, he might have been honored with the Silver Star. The title of the story is ironic because if someone has the courage to do something, they will do it. The irony is that if the situation is life threatening, the person may have the courage to go to it, but the sissy ness behind this is to ignore the situation and run away from it. Speaking is difficult to Bowker. He has a hard time talking to his girlfriend and his father. He talks to the intercom at Mama Burger, which is in his fantasy life.   

 3. Describe the narrator’s (not Bowker’s) transition from military to civilian life. 

The narrator does transition from military to civilian life. The narrator returns to civilian life by moving from Vietnam to graduate school at Harvard. The way he tells the story of the war is by getting the attention of the people. He says that he got himself into this mess and the mistakes he has made. Since the war has several memories and life, the narrator has a hard time overcoming what happens during the war. 

 4). Like other male characters in the novel, Norman Bowker develops an active fantasy 

life. Why does he need fantasy?  Is his fantasy life different in any way from the real 

one? In the novel, Norman Bowker develops an active fantasy life by talking to the intercom at Mama Burger. He needs fantasy because he has no one to talk to. His is unable to communicate with his girlfriend as well as his father. His fantasy life is different from the real one because in the real one, he has no one to communicate with.

Later, he hangs himself with a jump rope at the Y. 

 5. How do these two stories show us the way that fiction relates to real life?  

These two stories show us the way that fiction relates to real life by the fiction of the lies that tell the truth. O’ Brien uses several metaphoric quotes throughout the book, including these two stories. The historical background about the war does not reveal the truth as much as how the characters experiences during war in Vietnam. In the last line of “Notes”, Tim O’ Brien says “Norman did not experience failure of nerve that night. He did not freeze up or lose the Silver Star for valor. That part of the story is my own.” This means that the author made up this story meaning that Norman letting go of Kiowa is false.

 6. Why does Norman not try to relate to anyone? Why does his father not engage? How 

do you understand Norman’s action, all the way to the end? 

 Norman does not try to relate to anyone because they will not understand the traumatic experience in war at Vietnam. He father does not engage because his son Bowker feels pressured by him that he needs to win medals during the battle. I understand Norman’s actions. The fact that he will not talk about his war experience to anyone, he tries to talk through the author, which turns out to be a failure. At the end, Bowker dies.

  7. Do medals matter – in military and/or civilian life? For whom, why, and how? 

For Norman Broker the medals were really important because his dad only asked him one thing which was bringing a lot of medals after the war. After his experience in vietnam he realized they were a lot of solders that got meddles without doing any important thing, like he said " ..many brave men do not win medals for their bravery, and that others win medals for doing nothing. "

 8. Describe the evolution of Norman Bowker's character. (Consider how he was 

introduced in the beginning of the book.) Explore the reasons why O'Brien might have 

chosen to change his narrative stance in “Speaking of Courage.” 

 In the beginning of the book, Norman is considered to be a gentle soldier who carries a thumb that was given by Mitchell Sanders and a diary. Later, he feels pressured by his father to win medals in Vietnam. Once he leaves war and heads home, he is unable to communicate with his father or his ex-girlfriend because they will not understand the harrowing experience that Bowker has been though while fighting in Vietnam. Eventually, he commits suicide at the Y with a jump rope.     

 9. How does “Notes” expand the reader’s understanding of “Speaking of Courage”?

In this account, Bowker has the failure of nerve. He does not save Kiowa, even though he could have. The title makes the story “Speaking of Courage” more ambiguous. Bowker does not believe that he is as courageous as he turns out to be. The revolutions around the lake relate to the boredom that Bowker feels relating to the death of Kiowa. 

 10. Have things changed since the Vietnam War? Are there similar (or different) stories about the war we are fighting in Afghanistan or the one we recently ended in Iraq? 

All of the wars are the same , maybe we got new weapons or new military but the human feelings are still the same.A lot of people died during war and for what purpose?All of the wars has been influenced by the government and nowadays the people is realizing that the war is unworthy it.

 11. What kind of multi‐media, documents, and sources can you use to make your 

presentation a solid, coherent, in‐depth, and challenging? Keep in mind that you have to 

use the book, no matter what. 

 My group could design a short assessment in a Power point presentation. I would have the audience write the answer to the question provided on the slideshow. Then, I will collect the papers and hear my audiences’ responses. Once, the audience responds, I will listen to their comments towards the question provided by my group. 

 12. How will you ensure that the audience participates attentively throughout? 

To ensure that the audience participates attentively throughout my group’s presentation is to have all the students be separated from their friends facing me with their laptops put away and their cell phones on the teacher’s desk. Another thing, I will do is randomly call on people to answer questions, so that I know that they are focused and paying attention. If they are unable to answer my questions, I will put them closer to me. These choices I feel should ensure that my audience participates attentively during the presentation.      

  13. Do you want to assign a blog or homework (to be done in advance or after your session)? 

I want to assign a blog or homework to be done in advance or after my group’s session. Even though, the students may have been focused throughout the situation, I would still like my classmates to understand the chosen sections better. If they are able to utilize this activity, the possible assessment may be a breeze to them.

Blog 17

Following the student-led discussions, I expect to talk a lot about our feelings of all the soldiers and what we think will happen next. All of the characters each have their own personalities and way of being which takes us to why they carry the things they do. I also expect to hear personal stories from each student and how they compare to the characters in this novel. From the teacher I also expect to hear personal stories and for Mr. Parsons to ask us questions on how we feel about what we have read. 

Memories are our Stories

By saying “stories are for those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are”, this means that stories are sometimes all people have. Without memories all you have are stories.. and memories are what make those stories. Sometimes our past, whether it is a good one or a bad one, has consequences. Your past is basically what makes who you are today and the things you must overcome. The soldiers in this war were all there for many different reasons and all have such different personalities. Each one of them has their own past and way of thinking. In fact throughout the novel you see that each person is carrying certain things for their own specific reasons. For example, as you first read, Lt. Jimmy Cross carries letters and eventually a pebble that Martha sends to him because he is so in love with her. You make your own stories with your own past, for Tim O’brien. I have many experiences, but what I tend to remember the most is the places I have lived and visited in my past. I used to live in Uruguay and go to school there as a little girl which always seems to come up when I am talking about myself to people. The ambiance and just about everything there was positive and loving.  Probably one of my biggest memories would have to be of me visiting India this past summer. Man what an experience! This has been my biggest culture shock yet. You notices that the people in India have almost nothing, some even have no shoes but as long as they have underwear and food they are perfectly fine. Some choose not to even wear shoes because they would rather not kill bugs with their shoes. That to me shows so much about the people that they are and how ungrateful and spoiled us Americans truly are.       

The Things I'd Carry

If I were going away and I could only take five things, I would take a very close friend, loads and loads of money, a lot of clothes, my straightener and my dogs :). These things say a lot about me because they are things that are pretty important to me. I chose a very close friends because I absolutely love having company all the time. Someone I can tell everything to and do things with. I also chose money because well... who wouldn't want to take money? It's pretty difficult to go on in life with no money. Clothes, without a doubt, is essential because it keeps you covered and protected. You also don't want to wear the same exact thing every single day. My straightener really isn't THAT important but I mean.. hair is important and you can't let it look a mess everyday! My dogs... I love them to death and I don't know what I would do without them. No one can make me smile more than they do! :)

I chose this song because it talks about how the world is now, and how screwed up it is. Even just the title “Patience” describes the way you have to be in life because of society. The way people make money just for themselves and not even realizing what really is happening all around us just as he says in his song “Evangelists making a living on the videos of ribs of the little kids”. Another part in the song that I feel is so real is “ Pay no mind to the youths, Cause it’s not like the future depends on it, But save the animals in the zoo, Cause the chimpanzee dem a make big money, This is how the media pillages, On the TV the picture is, Savages in villages” I chose this specific part of the song as well because it’s so true.. we waste money on stupid things when there are so many others in need of help.
